Research Update: Postbiotics May Help Lower Blood Pressure
By Joe Zagami
Recently we told you all about the many benefits of Postbiotics. Well, thanks to breakthrough new research, you may be able to add “better cardiovascular health” to the growing list of postbiotic benefits.
Can Postbiotics Lower Blood Pressure?
Researchers at Monash University in Australia recently found that supplementing with the postbiotics acetate and butyrate for just three weeks helped people with high blood pressure see a 6.1 mmHg reduction in 24-hour systolic blood pressure compared with a placebo.1
That’s a big deal.
For reference, a 2017 study published in the journal Hypertension found that taking two low-dose prescription drugs for seven weeks lowered blood pressure by 6.7 mmHg compared with a placebo.2
Perhaps that’s why the researchers concluded, “In the future, [postbiotics] may help to alleviate the global burden of hypertension and associated cardiovascular disease.”
Do Postbiotic Supplements Work?
Another important detail about this new study? Researchers also found that supplementing with acetate and butyrate significantly increased their detectable levels in the control group’s blood samples.
This shows that taking a postbiotic supplement is a safe, viable way to both increase circulating postbiotics and potentially unlock their many health benefits. But which types of postbiotic supplements are best? Go HERE now to see our top three.
Putting It All Together
Make no mistake, new research like this is promising. But it's important to point out that it isn't definitive. It's possible that we may one day see doctors and other health professionals recommend postbiotics for heart health, just as many now recommend probiotics for digestive health.
That said, we suspect this study is just the first of many breakthrough postbiotic studies that will go mainstream in the near future. (Don't worry, we'll keep you updated.)
For now, when it comes to the power of postbiotics for optimizing health, blood pressure is a small – but exciting – part of the story.
